$22.4B (as of 2025-04-01)Finance & InvestmentsForbes #90Indonesia

◼ Origin

Inherited the Djarum Group alongside his brother Michael Bambang Hartono from their father Robert Budi Hartono Sr. Djarum produces kretek (clove cigarettes), one of Indonesia's best-selling cigarette brands. The Hartono brothers expanded the family fortune into banking, acquiring a controlling stake in Bank Central Asia (BCA), Indonesia's largest private bank, during the 1998 Asian financial crisis bailout.

◼ Self-Made Verdict — INHERITED

Inherited the Djarum tobacco business and BCA bank stake from his father. The BCA acquisition during the 1998 Asian financial crisis bailout was at distressed prices subsidized by the Indonesian government — capital transfer from the public sector. Not self-made.

◼ Documented marks

01

Djarum Group produces Djarum cigarettes, one of Indonesia's largest kretek (clove cigarette) brands. Indonesia has the world's highest adult male smoking rate (~67%), partly sustained by domestic tobacco manufacturers like Djarum through extensive marketing.

02

The Hartono family acquired Bank Central Asia (BCA) during Indonesia's 1998 financial crisis — purchasing the bank at heavily distressed prices enabled by the government bailout program BPPN (Indonesian Bank Restructuring Agency).

03

BCA is now Indonesia's largest private bank with over Rp 1,100 trillion (~$70 billion) in assets. The Hartono family trust controls approximately 47% through Farindo Investments.

04

Djarum Foundation's PB Djarum badminton program, one of Indonesia's most prominent youth sports programs, was accused in 2019 by the KPAI of using child athletes for tobacco brand marketing in violation of Indonesian law.

05

Indonesia has not fully implemented the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control's advertising restrictions; Djarum uses this regulatory gap to maintain extensive youth-facing sponsorships.

Supply Chain Labor Extraction

10 – 25 years

Statute: Systematic direction of global supply chains to source goods produced under documented poverty wages, dangerous conditions, and suppressed labor rights — while extracting historic profits through financial mechanisms that exclusively benefit shareholders and executives, as documented by independent audits, regulatory findings, and verified wage records.

Basis: Djarum Foundation ran the annual PB Djarum badminton audition program which in 2019 was formally accused by the Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI) of violating Indonesian Law No. 36/2009 on health — specifically the prohibition on using children in tobacco company marketing or promotion. KPAI found that child athletes as young as 13 wore Djarum-branded uniforms in nationally televised events functioning as tobacco brand marketing. Djarum Foundation canceled the program on September 5, 2019 under regulatory pressure. R. Budi Hartono is co-owner of the Djarum Group throughout this period.
